People enjoy viewing the 15-meter snow walls of the Yuki no Otani (Great Snow Valley), along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route that passes through the Northern Japan Alps to link Toyama and Nagano prefectures. The route was fully opened Wednesday morning after an annual winter closure, and the snow-walled "valley" 2,390 meters above sea level was visited by many tourists and skiers on its opening day.

The estimated number of visitors to Japan in March jumped 22.6 pct from a year earlier to 1,050,500, a record monthly high, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday. The visitor total grew for the 14th straight month, thanks to the popularity of cherry blossom tours, which boosted the number of visitors chiefly from China and Taiwan, as well as an easing of visa requirements for visitors from Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia.
